Archive for March, 2009

Spring is just around the corner – Saturday, to be exact – and what better way to bring in the new season than by looking at the classes we’re offering in April! We’re keeping the load light on classes this coming month because we have so many events planned (you’ll be hearing more about those later), however, I think that you’ll like what we are offering!

You all will see that we’re beginning to focus on techniques and offering them in one day workshops, as often as possible. This way, you all can plan to attend a class without having to block out weeks on your schedule. (Also, if you have friends traveling into town for the weekend, you can quickly see if there’s a class they may want to take!)

Pattern Reading

Are you a bit hesitant to “graduate” from easy garter, seed and ribbed scarves and blankets just because you’re a bit scared of the idea of reading a pattern? Have you looked at patterns and wondered what all those abbreviations mean? Then this is the class for you. Let Michelle and Holly take some of the mystery out of patterns and get you on your way to knitting more complicated things in no time!

Price: $40
Saturday, 4/4 1-3pm with Michelle
Tuesday, 4/14 7-9pm with Holly
Supplies needed: Notebook, pencil/pen

New Techniques for Knitting in the Round

Knitting in the round is such an easy technique, yet so many people get frightened at the idea of working with DPN’s, two circulars, what have you. This is a great class to get over that basic fear and learn some new-to-you techniques!

Price: $50
Saturday, 4/11 9am-12pm with Holly
Sunday, 4/26 9am-12pm with Michelle
Supplies needed: Worsted weight yarn, several sets of circulars in various lengths and DPN’s

Mastering Yarn Substitutions

We’ve all seen that perfect pattern and wonder if that yarn we picked up last year at MDSW will work. This class will help you understand how to substitute different yarns into patterns and understand why you may or may not want to.

Price: $40
Sunday 4/19 10-12pm with Holly
Thursday, 4/30 7-9pm with Holly
Supplies needed: Yarn Requirements Guide, notebook, calcualtor, pencil or pen

Continental and Combination Knitting

Do you have the desire to learn a new technique that millions of knitters use to knit faster and frequently with less pain? Olga will teach you how to knit in the Continental style, which lessens strain on your wrists and combines that with a purling technique that will improve your speed!

Price: $50
Sunday, 4/5 9am-12pm with Olga
Supplies needed: Worsted weight yarn, appropriate needles

Introduction to Hairpin Lace

Have you seen some of those great patterns from Stitch Diva using the Hairpin Lace technique but have been a bit intimidated to try it out? This class will show you the basics of Hairpin Lace and you’ll be working on those larger garments in no time!

Price: $40
Monday, 4/6 6-8pm with Olga
Supplies needed: DK or Worsted weight smooth yarn (containing silk or viscose), F or G crochet hook, hairpin lace tool

Basic Crochet Techniques for Knitters

Many knitting patterns call for some type of crochet to give a garment that “finishing touch”, however, many knitters are scared to pick up a hook and try to crochet. This class will show you some basic techniques that will take your knitting to the next level!

Price: $50
Monday, April 20th 6-9pm with Olga
Supplies needed: 3 worsted weight swatches (each 4×4″ with one still on the needles), G crochet hook

Please call the shop at (703) 836-0039 to register for classes. Registration will open Friday, 3/20 at 10:30am. Maximum 8 students per class. Classes must be paid for at time of registration. If you need to cancel a class, there will be a 25% cancellation fee until 7 days before the class, at which time, no refund will be issued. If Knit Happens cancels a class for any reason, we will contact the students to reschedule or issue a refund.

Birthday Mosaic!

For anyone who didn’t get a chance to come by and visit for the Birthday Weekend and Sale, I took a few pictures for y’all! (If you would like to see the full size shots, just head over to our Flickr set.)

Yes, we have a Flickr account just for the shop now, so feel free to add us as a contact – we love to see what the yarn you take home grows up to be!

A few of you have asked that question over the past few weeks that we’ve been live on Twitter and the answer is – all of us!  :)  Since we’re all planning on tweeting about knitalongs and projects fairly frequently, I figured that all of you who follow us should know who’s tweeting what.  So, from here on out, all of our tweets will start with [ ] with an initial between the brackets.

[H] – Holly (me!)
[M] – Michelle
[O] – Olga
[K] – Kel
[A] – Aimée
So, now you know!  :)

The Washington Post is stating that the peak dates for cherry blossom viewing will be April 3-9. At the shop we’ll be welcoming the cherry blossoms in with a themed Knit ‘N’ Nosh on Friday, April 3rd. It’s sort of a kick-off for the Hanami knitalong in addition to chance to enjoy some springtime treats.

The Hanami knitalong is very informal and everyone is welcomed to join in regardless of skill level. Several people have already started their shawls and others are just selecting their yarns. Everyone at the shop is working on it. We’ll be posting pictures over the next month or so. In addition we will be Twittering about our progress too.

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate our birthday with us this weekend – we had tons of fun!  Because this weekend was such fun, I’ve decided that I’m going to keep some of the sale going for those who didn’t get a chance to come in… or just didn’t get a chance to get all they wanted. :)
